OCTOBER 2010 (text only)

Increase Our Faith
In Luke 17:5-10 the apostles ask the Lord to , “increase our faith!” They know that they will come across many ordeals and hardships and so they want an extra dose of faith. Faith can not be measured or issued out. Faith strengthens us to deal with the challenges of life.
A slave does not expect his master to allow him rest after toiling in the fields. Once the slave has finished this chore it may be his duty to prepare the master’s meal. Once this is done, hardly will the master ask him to sit down with him and eat. Nor will the master thank the slave for his service. As a Christian when you have done all that you have been ordered to do, don’t expect thank you, or a pat on the back. You are a servant of God and have done what you were supposed to do.

Jesus encouraged his disciples to pray always, never giving up. He related to them the story of a judge who neither feared God or man. A widow in the city repeatedly would go to the judge pleading for “justice gainst my opponent.” Each time she was turned down by the judge. Fnally the judge gave in granting the widow justice just so she would leave him alone.
If the unjust judge granted justice to this persistent widow, think of what God will do for his chosen ones. When God’s people beseech him, he hears. In his own time frame God acts on the supplications of his people.

Announcements
VISITORS
+You honor us by your presence in worship today, and we welcome you warmly. Let us know if there is anything you need to feel more at home. Also, please fill out a visitor’s card and place it in the alms basin or hand it to the priest. Feel free to join us in any of the upcoming events and activities. We would love to have you at any or all of them.

+CHILDREN AT ST. MARK’S
We want St. Mark’s to be a friendly, safe place for children to be formed spiritually through Christian fellowship, play, worship and learning. We offer classes for children every second and fourth Sunday of the month; and ask that parents, grandparents, and interested others to teach.
Our curriculum is based on Gospel stories.
Children may gather in the classroom at 10:00 every Sunday. They will have a class on designated Sundays and on other Sundays they will be supervised by an adult volunteer. Children stay in the classroom until the offertory at which time they are expected to join the parish family in church and stay through communion.

+ICE CREAM SOCIAL and GAMES
Our ice cream event for the neighborhood was wonderful. Many St. Markers participated and were there with warm smiles to lend a hand. Even though the weather was not hot and sunny, we had a good number of neighborhood folks come by, enjoy the ice cream, and chat. This was a wonderful way for us to make our loving presence known in our neighborhood, and I hope to see many more events like this. In addition, it looks like our own children and youth had a lot of fun eating ice cream and participating in water games. If I'm not mistaken we adults had fun too! Thanks to everyone who helped with this event. This is the kind of event we need to have again!
The weather didn’t cooperate , but the Holy Spirit did!

+TRAINING FOR RESOURCE VOLUNTEERS

+ACOLYTE PRACTICE will be held at 9:00 a.m., October 24th

+Our OPEN HOUSE was a wonderful event
We were able to meet and greet our neighbors as we opened the rectory doors to the neighborhood for our open house. This is an opportunity to introduce this new ministry to our neighbors.
Thanks to those who helped out. Cassandra Joseph, Heager Hill, Sylvia McClain, Carolyn Foster, Sundra Smith, Marietta Cameron all deserve a special thanks for the time and the energy they spent cleaning rooms and setting up furniture. Andrea Duckery and Regina Mumford helped with set up and clean up for the Open House. Our house looks great, and we are close to having it ready for our Grand Opening.

FALL FLING
+This is to thank all persons that contributed to our cookout Sunday. In particular, special thanks to Sam who labored in the heat & smoke to cook our meat, and for Charles that provided it, and saw fit to make a store run during service for a needed item; for Elgin, Mark, Paul. Pat+ and others with the outside setup and breakdown; for Lillie, Mark and those who prepared and set out the foods; for Jalete, Regina and others for the cleanup, and we appreciate the teenagers who helped with the tables and chairs. Heager Hill

Thanks to all who helped out with this event. Special thanks to Heager Hill who organized us and to Sam Nelms who grilled the meat. Many more helped with set up and clean up and providing food. We are grateful to all for making this event happen. Rev. Sara-Scott Wingo
Thank you ST. STEPHEN’S YOUTH BAND directors for leading our communion hymns. We are delighted you are here.

+CHILDREN’S CHOIR
It is a special day when children sing for us. Be sure to let our children’s choir and director know how proud you are of them and how much you appreciate their contribution to our worship.

+GRAND OPENING for RESOURCE CENTER
Will take place on Saturday, November 20th from 2:00-4:00 p.m. At 2:00 p.m. there will be a ribbon cutting and a house blessing. Please plan to be there.
The first day of operation for the Resource Center will be November 22nd from 9:00a.m.-noon. We are planning to begin by opening one day a week. This center is a work in progress and we may add another day soon. We’ll keep you posted.

+We are the recipients of a 15 passenger van donated by Children's Hospital. It has about 120,000 miles on it, and seems to be in good running condition. There are some cosmetic issues, and in due time we might be able to address them. Regardless, we now have a vehicle we can use to make runs in our surrounding neighborhoods to give transportation to church events. We hope and pray that God will increase our ministry through use of this van.

+ Welcome back to Birmingham, Derrick Hill, son of Heager Hill. Derrick is returning home on the management team of DriveTime Auto Sales that opened in Pelham last week. He will be operations manager. This is the first Drive Time Auto Sales in Alabama. They have locations in 14 states. Derrick was top sales person, and assistant loan advisor in Atlanta. He says, “They finance everybody....!! “

+At St. Mark's we are receiving many blessings to help support our ministries. Please continue to keep our parish family in your prayers and commit yourself to giving of your time, talent, and treasure. This is a critical time in the life of our parish for you to be involved as we seek to move forward in ministry and mission.
God’s Peace
Rev. Sara-Scott Wingo
